On Wednesday 12 July, 2023, Water is Life took part in the workshop:
“Desertification in Asterousia: Conventional or Nature-based Solutions?”

Organized by The University of Crete and the Natural History Museum of Crete, the workshop was at the old town hall in Pyrgos (Municipality of Archanes Asterousia.) It featured presentations from scientists about different approaches to addressing the area’s water situation and informative (lively) discussion – and networking.

Water is Life’s Andreas Andreas Zaharioudakis shows workshop leader, Michalis Probonas, where the WiL project is active, and shares WiL’s work and approach to solving the problem _ and the great need for actions that target rain harvesting and promoting rain infiltration into the aquifers.
Water is Life’s Kostas Maniadakis points out that although “studies are good, we already have many that clearly show what the problem is. We need action!”

NewLife4Drylands “aims to provide…a framework and a protocol for identifying sustainable solutions” for areas (like ours) facing grave water shortages and desertification. Learn more about this project on their website. (Available in English, Greek, Italian, and Spanish.)
